The Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority, Alhaji Omar Suleiman, has assured port concessionaires of adequate infrastructural development and deeper draught for bigger ships to berth in Nigerian ports.
He gave the assurance in Lagos on the arrival of the biggest West African Maersk Vessel, MV Maersk Conakry, at the APM Terminals Apapa Limited.
Suleiman, represented by the Executive Director, Marine and Operations, NPA, Miss Elizabeth Eghareva, said that frantic efforts were being made by the NPA to replicate the gesture in other terminals.
The managing director said that this would ensure that bigger ships also berthed in other terminals.
He said that this would take the NPA to another phase of infrastructural development at the ports.
Suleiman recalled that, prior to port concession in 2006, the Lagos ports played host to vessels of not more than 10 metres.
“Today, the MV Maersk Conakry made it to the APM Terminals with a draught of 12 metres,’’ he said.
