Nairobi Star (Nairobi) Samora Abisai 29 June 2011 opinion The Joint Admissions Board has announced a double university intake this year; the boldest ever step in attempting to solve the heavy admissions backlog that has lasted more than two decades now. Although the move is laudable, it is only a faint scratch on the surface of the multilayered problems that bedevil our tertiary education system. Understandably, the University Academic Staff Union has threatened industrial action if the double intake plan is effected this year

Mombasa Traffic boss Charles Koskei wants the Mombasa Municipal Council to open new bus parks at Changamwe and Nyali to cater for buses from upcountry and the North Coast. He said currently buses are parked within the CBD leading to congestion and the council should designate stops.

Kosgei said the council should create parks and stops at Nyali to cater for buses and matatus from Mombasa town and Lamu. Yusuf Kangi, a bus owner said the traffic department charges them for obstruction almost every day because they do not have a designated place to park their buses. He said they pay Sh10,000 when taken to court which is a loss to their business.

Koskei also called on the council to construct additional big markets like Kongowea in Changamwe and Likoni to cater for food brought into Mombasa by trucks. He noted that creation of different markets at Changamwe and Likoni will curb bypassing of Lorries all the way to Kongowea which otherwise create unnecessary jams “Decentralization of the market at Kongowea is a big let down to movement of Lorries in this area and it needs to be addressed immediately,” he said.
