Steven Gerrard says he welcomes competition for places in the Liverpool midfield, with Charlie Adam looking set to join the club from Blackpool this summer.

The Anfield club have been in pursuit of the Scottish midfielder since the January transfer window, but negotiations have reportedly stalled over Blackpool’s £12 million asking price.

The arrival would see another midfielder come in to the squad after Jordan Henderson completed his move earlier in the summer from Sunderland, but Gerrard believes that the competition created by this switch would only be good for the side.

“We have a lot of good midfielders here. For example, I think Lucas Leiva was our best player last season, but whoever I play with, it’s not a problem,” Gerrard was quoted as saying by The Mirror.

Meanwhile, Raul Meireles could reportedly be among the players set to leave Anfield this summer following Adam’s potential arrival, as well as the expected signing of Stewart Downing from Aston Villa.
