By Ikechukwu Nnochiri ABUJA—EMBATTLED former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, yesterday, challenged the power of an Abuja High Court sitting at Apo, to try him for alleged fraud. Bankole who went before the high court with an application seeking to quash the entire criminal charge against him, maintained that no court has the power to try him over any action he performed while exercising his powers as Speaker of the House of Representatives. In an application he filed through his lead counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, the former Speaker relied on provisions of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act and the National Assembly Service Commission Act, to insist that he was immuned from prosecution, even as he contended that there was no evidence to sustain any of the 17-count charge against him.

West Ham United look to have won the race for Peterborough United’s highly-rated striker Craig Mackail-Smith, according to The Daily Star Sunday.

Mackail-Smith has reportedly rejected Premier League football with Norwich City in favour of the Hammers, who are apparently prepared to make a bid of £3 million for the Scotland international.

The striker scored 35 goals for Peterborough last season as they clinched promotion from League One via the play-offs, and made his debut for Scotland against Brazil in March as an 87th minute substitute.

West Ham’s new manager Sam Allardyce is reportedly convinced that Mackail-Smith will move to Upton Park, as the Hammers look to rebuild their squad after relegation from the Premier League last season.
