New Rangers owner Craig Whyte has confirmed that the club is bidding for Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar, but the recent appointment of Alex McLeish as manager means the move has been delayed.
McLeish, himself a former Rangers boss of five years until 2006, is understood to be considering his transfer strategy after making the move from local rivals Birmingham.
Whyte told skysports.com: “We’ve made a bid for Cuellar, but, with their managerial change, it has slowed there a bit.”
The Glasgow club are understood to have had an initial bid of £1.5 million for the Spaniard rejected.
Villa have reportedly placed a valuation of £3m on Cuellar, and are unwilling to sell for anything below that, as winger Ashley Young is also on the verge of being sold to Manchester United.
Ally McCoist, who inherited the manager’s post at Ibrox at the end of last season from mentor Walter Smith, is keen to re-sign the former Osasuna central defender, who spent a year as a Rangers player in 2007-08 before joining Villa in a £7.8m deal.
The attempt to sign Cuellar comes in spite of his current knee injury.
