Entebbe — Ugandans should take on individual parenting responsibilities to reduce the number of street children, Entebbe Municipality deputy mayor Simon Kimanye urged as the world marked Day of the African Child last week.
“Too much love shown to children breeds problems when the parents die and caretakers who give children chores are taken to be oppressors, prompting the children to go to the streets,” Mr Kimanye said at a function organised by Huys Link Community Initiative, an NGO working with children and youth in difficult circumstances.
He said about 10,000 children in Uganda live on the street in filthy conditions in urban centres and have to beg to survive, adding that four cases of missing children are reported in Entebbe every month.
The International Day of the African Child has been celebrated on June 16 every year since 1991, when it was first initiated by OAU in honour of those who participated in the Soweto Uprising of June 16, 1976. The day also raises awareness of the need to improve education provided to the African Child.
