Andrew Cole’s son Devante has signed a three-year contract with Manchester City.

The 16-year-old will follow in his father’s footsteps by appearing for City, though the former England international was more famous for pulling on the red jersey of their local rivals Manchester United.

The youngster made excellent progress last season, appearing at international level five times for the England U-16s, scoring twice.

Cole has been with City for several years and will now hope to emulate his father, who played for City, United and Newcastle United amongst others, in becoming a prominent striker in the Premier League.

“Devante joins us as a scholar and he will go into the Under-17 level next season – a group of players we are quietly optimistic about,” Academy chief Mark Allen told the club’s official website.

“We’ll be pushing them forward next season and developing them further and I’m sure you’ll be seeing a lot more of him and a lot of the other lads in the near future.”
