The Government has announced that it is installing a major compost plant to recycle waste in Accra, with plans to build other the plants in other regions.
Speaking to Citi News, the Minister for the Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said the compost plant would be ready for use by the end of 2011. This forms part of a major push by government to clear the mounting filth in the major cities of the nation.
“We have gone through all the processes and the plants are being installed and it won’t take long at all for the compost plant to start operation. We are also looking at the possibility of getting smaller plants in the other regions to deal with the plastic waste in the system.
“We have a short term, midterm and long term plant. The long term plant is under the sanitation programme and only commissioned last week” he disclosed.
The capital city of Accra has run out of dumping sites, according to waste management companies. The companies have thus been forced to abandon refuse at various homes. Due to the situation, the Ghana Health Service has warned of the possibility of another cholera outbreak.
The Local Government Minister told Citi News that negotiations were carried out last week for two dump sites to be re-opened.
