Maputo — Over 60 per cent of the new sanitation system for the central Mozambican city of Beira has been completed, with the renovation or addition of 61 kilometres of sewage pipes, 11 pumping stations, four elevating stations and six outlets into the sea.

On Thursday the system will partially be handed over by the government to the Beira Autonomous Sanitation Services, which will be responsible for maintaining the project

The cost of the sanitation project is put at 62.65 million euros (about 88.3 million US dollars), of which 52.95 million euros comes from the European Union’s European Development Fund (EDF).

The rehabilitation and expansion of the sanitation system began in October 2007 and is scheduled to end in the first quarter of next year.

By then a new water residue treatment station will be completed with six anaerobic treatment tanks, biological filters, decanters, and other technologies to protect the environment.

According to the Maputo daily “Noticias”, the sanitation system is highly complex with the use of advanced technology utilised in countries such as Brazil. This is needed because of the city’s very high water table.

The project director, Paulo Oscar, told “Noticias” that after the work has been concluded the city will not be subjected to flooding, which will reduce the occurrence of water-borne diseases.

Sewage will be treated before being released into the estuary of the Pungue River, reducing faecal contamination of the river and the beaches.
