Maputo — The Mozambican police announced on Thursday that they have arrested the gang of thieves who attacked a Maputo branch of the Nigerian bank UNA (United Bank for Africa).
In the Wednesday morning attack, the gang shot dead a security guard, and a client who was depositing a large sum of money. Eyewitnesses claimed that the gang consisted of two men and one woman.
Announcing the arrests, Arnaldo Chefo, spokesperson for the Maputo City police command, said that the gang had been neutralized and that further investigations into the case are under way. But he refused to give any further details, on the grounds that this might hinder the ongoing investigation.
Chefo urged all citizens or institutions who wish to transport large sums of money, to contact the nearest police station to provide them with an escort.
He pointed out that, unlike private security companies, the police provide this service free of charge.
