Mukundi Mwangi broke the 5,000m meet record during the second and final day of the Administration Police (AP) athletics Championships at the Nyayo Stadium yesterday.
On a day dominated by guest athletes, Mukangu of APTC ‘A’ clocked 13:50.5 to slice off five seconds of the previous record (13:55.8) set by Kigen Kibet in 2005. Kiprotich Yego was second after posting 13:52:01 while David Kogei clocked 13:53.3 to finish third.
Eunice Kales won the women’s 10, 000m after clocking 34:40.7 ahead of APTC ‘A’s Edna Kimaiyo, who returned 35:11.9. Another guest athlete Mary Chemweno was third in 35:20.9.
Richard Kiplagat of APTC ‘A’ put on an impressive performance to win the men’s 800m after shaking off stiff challenge from guest runners Mark Bett and George Koech. He was timed at 1:48.9 with Bett and Koech returning 1:49.2 and 1:49.4 respectively.
In the ladies event, Beatrice Chepkoech led guest runners to sweep the board in the 800m . She won in a time of 2:10.4 and was followed in the second place by Jedidah Wanjiru, who recorded 2:14.5. Sylvia Cherop clocked 2:17.0to finish third. The first officer to cross the line was fourth-placed Susan Cherotich of (APTC ‘A’) on 2:18.8.
Guest runners also controlled the proceedings in the 200m women’s race with Selina Kelong-26.2-leading a guest clean sweep that saw Joan Cheron and Everlyne Koskei settle for second and third places after timing
28.8 and 27.1 respectively. Rosemary Kariuki of APTC ‘B’ contented with fourth position to top the officers list after 27.8.
