Coach Fred Kajoba and striker Richard Lubwama wore relieved faces after Simba secured the Uganda Cup with a 2-1 win over URA at Nakivubo stadium on Saturday.

Kajoba was in charge when Simba lost to Victors in last year’s Cup final. His striker Lubwama was also at fault then, missing a penalty as Victors romped to a 5-4 post-match shoot-out victory at Nakivubo.

The duo returned to Nakivubo on Saturday seeking atonement and were clearly overjoyed after referee Mohammed Segonga blew the final whistle.

“It has been a disturbing period for me since that final,” Lubwama said, reflecting on his penalty miss a year ago.

The 27-year-old striker buried the ghost, scoring the winner on 61 minutes to seal Simba’s second Uganda Cup title and an appearance in the Caf Confederations Cup later this year.

Kajoba, who was also in goal when Simba lost 2-0 to SC Villa in the 1998 final, said: “You can’t be unlucky all your life. This day has ended those traumatizing memories.” There were plenty of emotions. Members of the Uganda Football Referees Associations (UFRA) bid farewell to Segonga after the game.

The game marked the end of Segonga’s 17-year career as a Fifa referee. “I will always be around to offer any advice to referees. I have had some memorable times in this profession,” Segonga said.

Sengonga’s retirement leaves Fred Mufta, Ali Kalyango, Dennis Batte and Ronnie Kalema as the only Ugandan centre referees with Fifa badges.
