7 June 2011 WITH the recent rains most of Swakopmund's roads were damaged, and in order to maintain its vision to "provide and maintain safe, sufficient and affordable services and promote future development to the benefit of our community", the Swakopmund Municipality decided to repair and widen Daniel Kamho Avenue (the old Henties Bay road). Daniel Kamho Avenue will be widened to four lanes to accommodate the increasing North-South traffic between the town centre and the growing northern suburbs

ALFRED Sumaiili and Ella Scholtz were crowned Namibia’s singles champions at the National Closed Badminton Championships in Windhoek on June 4.

The top-seeded Sumaiili beat second-seeded Jurgen Leicher 21-15, 21-17 in the men’s final, while Scholtz beat Atushe Shihepo 21-14, 21-11 in the women’s final.

Sumaiili and Leicher teamed up to win the men’s doubles title after defeating Quintin du Preez and Org van Rensburg 17-21, 21-16, 21-17 in the final, while Julie Rush and Melanie Campbell beat Ella Scholtz and Lynette Scholtz 21-15, 14-21, 21-9 in the women’s doubles final.

Quintin du Preez and Lynette Scholtz beat Alfred Sumaiili and Melanie Campbell 21-10, 21-15 in the mixed doubles final.

A highlight of the event was the top form displayed by some of Namibia’s up-and-coming youngsters.

In the women’s singles event, the 11-year-old Nita Scholtz progressed to the semifinals where she lost to another junior, the 16-year-old Atushe Shihepo.

In the men’s singles event two juniors made it through to the semifinals. The 15-year-old Francois Maritz lost 21-8, 21-9 to the eventual winner Alfred Sumaiili, while the 14-year-old Rezano Willemse lost 21-19, 21-14 to Jurgen Leicher.

Girls: Atushe Shihepo; Nita Scholtz, Shandre de Freitas Bachelau, Saskia Henckert and Gesa Jeske

South Africa Country Districts (July 2-8 in Rustenburg):

Men: Alfred Sumaiili; Jurgen Leicher; Louis Kotze, Wanjo Kollmitz and Stefan Ackermann

Ladies: Julie Rush; Lynette Scholtz; Melanie Campbell; Bianka Neumann and Ingrid Kollmitz

SA Veteran Championships August 13-20 in Durban:

Men: Jurgen Leicher; Remi Leemans; Louis Kotze; Leon Koch and Francois du Preez

Ladies: Ella Scholtz; Lynn du Preez; Ingrid Kollmitz and Heidi Spinas.
