Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has admitted that he has been constantly checking to see who the club’s new boss might be, but concedes he has no idea who will take charge.

Villa have been linked with a number of managers since the announcement that Gerard Houllier would be leaving the club although Bent admits that he is not even sure who is in the frame for the position anymore.

He told Sky Sports: “Every day I am checking on television and speaking to people to see who it’s going to be but you just don’t know.

“Mark Hughes was supposed to be in the running but he has gone out now and I couldn’t tell you who it’s going to be.

“I couldn’t even tell you who is in the frame now because it’s so up in the air.”

When an announcement regarding a new manager is made, Bent is sure that the fans will be behind the appointment and is confident the club can build on last season’s performance.

He added: “But I’m sure, whoever the new manager, the fans will give him time.

“It’s a big, big job to take and I’m sure the fans will be behind him whoever he is.

“It’s been a difficult season, but we still finished ninth and we need to build on that.”
