The Universal Boxing Organisation (UBO) representative, Emmanuel Mlundwa, has warned Francis Cheka of being stripped of his title belt should he fight Daniel Wanyonyi of Kenya.

The middleweight sensation, whose time to defend the title expired three months ago, was last month directed by the UBO vice president David Maizner to defend the title first before engaging in a non-title bout.”Cheka is yet to defend his title. We’ve opted to give him another chance to do so. If he fails to do so, we’ll declare it vacant,” Maizner warned in a letter whose copy was availed to The Citizen.

Unperturbed by the warning, the stage is now set for him to trade punches with the Kenyan in the non-title fight on June 25, which would force the UBO to declare his title vacant. UBO rules and regulations require a boxer to defend the title within six months. Cheka defended his last September, nine months to date.

“The UBO directives are clear, he should defend it first before going for the non-title fights, but he is doing just the opposite.”The fight against Wanyonyi is not sanctioned by the UBO, therefore if he insists on facing the Kenyan, he will be stripped of the title automatically,” said Mlundwa, who doubles as Pugilist Syndicate of Tanzania president.

Mlundwa said Cheka should learn from other boxers’ mistakes, citing an example of Juma Fundi who was stripped of his flyweight title recently.Cheka said lack of promoters was the major factor behind his failure to defend the title within the regulation time. “I didn’t fight within the required period because I’ve other titles to defend,” he said

He added: “But who will organise it for me? None of the promoters I work with are interested in staging the UBO fight because it costs a lot of money.”
