SOUTH Africa won the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Southern Region Youth Championship over the weekend at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek.
South Africa finished with a total of 23 gold medals, 19 silver and eight bronze medals to get a total of 449 points in the two day under 17 championship.
Botswana were second with a total of 12 medals (three gold, four silver and five bronze).
The host nation, Namibia finished third on the medal count with three gold, three silver and 10 bronze medals.
Sune Witman won gold for Namibia in the women’s javelin when she threw a distance of 43,28m.
Abrille Beukes cleared a height of 1,60m to win the gold medal in the women’s high jump.
Shiivomwene Shilongo won the third gold for Namibia in the 2 000 steeplechase in a time of seven minutes and 13,77 seconds. Ndinelao Shangula was second with a time of 7:23,82.
On the medal count, Lesotho was fourth with a total of four medals (two gold and two silver) followed by Zambia (one gold and one silver), Zimbabwe (one silver and six bronze), Swaziland (one silver and two bronze), Seychelles (one silver) and Mauritius (one silver).
Angola was the only nation to not win a medal in the competition.
