Namboole — To Ugandans who read the press on Friday, prayers of good hope accompanied Denis Onyango as he flew back to South Africa apparently to sign a contract with topflight giants Mamelodi Sundowns. But to the 26-year-old Mpumalanga Black Aces shot-stopper, it was a flight filled with trepidation as he awaited the unknown.
The New Vision of May 27, 2011, reported that Onyango, who had arrived in the country last Wednesday, had travelled back that day (Friday) to seal “a three-year lucrative deal” with Sundowns after his agent Ivica Stankovic had completed successful negotiations. But Onyango, who returned on Saturday night in time for yesterday’s Uganda Cranes first day training ahead of the crucial Nations Cup qualifier against Guinea Bissau at Namboole on June 4, cut a furious figure.
“That guy (writer) has put me in problems,” Onyango said, “My club read everything that is written here and when they read that I was going to sign for Sundowns, they called me up and gave me a ticket to go and explain myself. “They accused me of doing business behind their back yet I still had a three-year contract with them. The New Vision had quoted KickOff (South African publication) in the earlier story but when I called their editors, they said they hadn’t run any such story.”
Onyango added: “But I had to explain to my club (Aces). I also told them that I had national commitments, so they let me come back but after our game, I will again appear before the disciplinary committee. As of now, Aces say I’m still their player.”
Looking sharp
Meanwhile, 15 players trained with Bobby Williamson and his assistant Jackson Mayanja and all looked sharp. David Obua (Hearts), Hassan Wasswa (Altay), Geoffrey Sserunkuma and Onyango joined 11 home-based players with Joseph Kabagambe, Andy Mwesigwa expected last evening. Geoffrey Massa arrived on Saturday but didn’t train.
