World Championships and All Africa Games qualifying times once again proved elusive at the sixth and final leg of the Athletics Kenya and National Bank of Kenya weekend meetings at Kamariny Stadium in Iten.
Gothenburg half marathon winner Joyce Chepkurui missed the women’s 10,000m qualifying mark by 1:70.4 minutes after winning her race in 33.15.3. In the women’s 5,000m, Margaret Masai posted an impressive 16:51.3 to win the race but she missed to dip under the 15:14.00 qualifying standard. In the 1,500m men, Kibet Barng’etuny won in 3:44.6 with Fred Musyoki coming second in 3:45.4. Both missed the 3:35.00 qualifying mark. Athletics Kenya Rift Valley Province secretary David Leting acknowledged it was difficult to meet the qualifying mark in thigh altitude. The world championships will be held in Daegu, South Korea from August 27 to September 4 while the All Africa Games are from September 3-18 in Maputo. Mozambique
