SOUTH-South solidarity, cooperation and mutual support, are the defining characteristics of the relationship between Namibia and China, according to Theo-Ben Gurirab, Speaker of the National Assembly.

Speaking at an official meeting with the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China, Wu Bangguo, in Windhoek on Friday, Gurirab said that he has witnessed the “ever growing and deepening bilateral interaction and joint ventures between China and Namibia.”

Wu arrived in Namibia last Thursday, leading a high-powered Chinese delegation, which came to witness and participate in the opening of the Africa-China Young Leader’s Forum which took place in Windhoek over the course of the weekend.

The Speaker of the National Assembly said that a long list of cooperation agreements confirms the history and depth of China-Namibia mutual support and cooperation. Namibia and China further expanded their areas of cooperation and support on Friday as the Director of the National Planning Commission, Tom Alweendo, and China’s Deputy Minister of Commerce, Fu Ziying, signed four agreements.

The agreements relate to economic and technical cooperation, the provision of medical equipment and materials from China, construction, as well as cash aid of N$3,4 million for flood relief in the north and north-eastern parts of Namibia.

Wu and his delegation also met with the Chairman of the National Council, Asser Kapere, on Friday. Wu said the political relationship between the two countries is based on equality and political respect.
