interview
It’s over for South Africa’s Nkuli. The bubbly television intern was the third housemate to leave the house on Sunday, after Jossy Joss’ departure a week ago and Lotus’s unceremonious departure on Friday. For Nkuli, it’s back to being a student – she plans to return to school to pursue her Degree in Business Administration. The Namibian yesterday had a telephonic interview with Nkuli about her stay in the house.
So how does the morning after feel?
I feel pretty good actually. The response I’ve received since coming out of the house has been good. I think that one of the objectives I set out to achieve before entering the house has been met and that was to prove to myself that I can do reality television. I’ve gotten the experience of being in front of the camera and I already have qualifications in television production. I’m loving the outside world so far.
You and Michael dated? Tell us a bit more about that?
I don’t want to elaborate too much on that, reason being that there was more than one person involved and he is not here at the moment. What I can say though is that Michael and I have been friends for a long time, even before we dated. The romance part of our relationship was over way before we came to the house. Our relationship before the house and in the house was purely platonic. I might have flirted with him in the house but that was purely platonic. I mean I’m a flirty type of person.
Was there any connection between you and Luclay?
Any connection that existed between Luclay and I was a friendship, or more like a kinship connection, and nothing beyond that. There was no romantic connection there, although I think he might have been attracted to me. I mean just because we happened to click doesn’t mean there was anything there.
What did you think of Luclay’s tantrums? Him swearing at Biggie and pushing Lotus to the edge which ultimately led to her disqualification?
I don’t really want to comment on that, because people can make up their own opinions based on what they see. What I can say though is that Luclay is a great contender in the game and I wish him all the best. His tantrums were never directed at me so I don’t really think I can comment fairly on that.
You always had Luclay’s back when he was involved in fights, was it sincere or was it a thing of standing by your fellow countrymen so as to gain support?
My having his back was absolutely sincere. It wasn’t to gain support at all because I was merely standing up for what I believe in and that is supporting a friend. It is something I would have done even if I was out of the house at that time. I was simply standing up for my friend.
What did you gain most out of the experience?
If anything, I’ve gained more confidence in myself and I’m motivated to go forward. I’m motivated to stand up for the things I believe in and I will not change myself to please anyone. It was a great experience and I can’t really say I’ve learned that much because I was myself in the house. As much as there was the negative, I’m going to take the positive with me from this experience.
Just thought you might like to know, a lot of people thought that you were one of the most intelligent housemates. Do you think this counted against you?
I definitely think so because that intimidates a lot of people. I mean I know that I can be intimidating and that in itself might have intimidated a lot of people. I remember there were a lot of discussions in the house such as about women’s menstrual cycles or women farting in public and I distanced myself from such discussions, which might have caused people to think I’m snobbish. That wasn’t the case as I simply saw no sense in discussing such issues. Perhaps that might also have counted against me, I mean that might have made the viewers feel like they couldn’t connect with me in a way.
What now for Nkuli?
Well, my first priority is to definitely pick up from where I left off in terms of my school work so that I can graduate next year. I’m currently studying towards a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration. I’m also doing an internship as a community television intern and I’m looking forward to going back to that. All the people who want to keep track of my progress can find me on Nkuli.com where they will find all sorts of information about me. This is definitely not the last time you’ll hear of Nkuli!
I appreciate both the support I got from the people inside and outside of South Africa. Thank you.
