Police in Mbarara say the 28-year-old collected Shs20 million from 200 residents, promising them jobs in Iraq which never materialised. Mbarara CID officer, Allan Twishimye, says the suspect, whose name we are withholding for legal reasons, hails from Kazo in the new Kiruhura District carved out of Mbarara.
He claims to own KBR, a purported recruitment firm, but its particulars cannot be traced in official archives, according to police.
Mr Twishimye says some of the complainants are coming from as far as Kabarole District in Tooro kingdom and all “pin this man” who allegedly promised to get for them work placements in Iraq.
“We expect many more complainants to come because now we have over 200 people,” he says.
The conning, detectives say, all happened this month.
Security officials have expanded the investigations to establish if the suspect could have been recruiting the people for “other purposes”.
