Country Orders Removal of Uganda Cops From Migingo

The government has called for an immediate withdrawal of all security personnel from all countries involved in the battle for Migingo island until the issue is diplomatically resolved.

And in its strongest warning so far, the government has also appealed to Ugandan security personnel stationed on the island to respect Kenya as a country and avoid behaviour that could spoil the good relationship between the two countries.

Speaking in Migori town after a tour of the Island, Nyanza PC Francis Mutie said it is important that Kenyan borders are respected if Uganda and Kenya are to continue being good neighbors. “Ugandans have been occupying the island since 2004 and this is wrong going by the international laws,” he said.

He called for withdrawal of all police officers from the island until the issue of ownership of the island is resolved, saying that was the agreement before.

Mutie’s remarks followed a discovery that Ugandan security personnel stationed on Migingo had actually moved to the nearby twin island of Ugingo and constructed illegal structures there.
