Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar almost reversed his decision to retire at the end of the season.

The veteran shot-stopper had announced a few months ago that he will hang up his gloves after the campaign, with his final game set to be in the Champions League final against Barcelona on May 28.

But the Scot has now insisted that the 40-year-old had second thoughts about calling time on his career.

“Edwin has decided he wants to go out at the top, but he did have a wobble last week,” Ferguson told reporters.

“He came to see me and told me he was thinking about changing his mind.

“I had to tell him to be quick because we are in the middle of concluding a deal for a new keeper. He came back a few days later to say he would be sticking with his original decision.”
