Mugai Secondary School and Kidundu emerged the Safaricom Sakata Ball champions during the western region finals at the Kaduyi Stadium over the weekend.
Mugai, from Kakamega, squeezed a 1-0 past Busia’s Amukura in an entertaining final. Valen Maero scored the all important goal in the second half after goal-less draw in the first half with Mugai wasting a glut of chances in the Amukura danger zone.
In making the final, Amukura FC beat Olympic Youth 1-0 while Mugai had beaten Friends Bukembe Boys with the same margin in the semifinals.
Emayi Oneso and Polycap Oputu of Amukura emerged the best defender and midfielder respectively to grab the Sh10, 000 cash awards on offer. Laban Mwita was named the Most Valuable Player with Collins Eshara emerging the best scorer and as well received Sh10,000 each. The winners bagged Sh100, 000 while the runners-up pocketed Sh50,000.
In the girls’ edition, Kindundu from Chavakali came from a goal down to beat Rehema Academy 2-1 to book their national finals slot. Linet Kivisu gave the losers the lead in the first half before Kidundu came back forcefully in the second and a goalkeeping error in the opponent’s area gifted them the equaliser through Christabel Ichanza. Evelyn Mohamed scored their second and the winner a minute from time. Kidundu prevailed 3-0 over Bishop Sulumet from Malaba in a one-sided semifinal while Rehema Academy dismissed hosts Webuye Youth Centre 3-2.
Trizah Egesa from Kidundu was voted the Most Valuable Player. Defence Juma from Rehema emerged the best defender with Kunani Theodore from Webuye scooping the best goalkeeper’s award. Robai Kubedi and Hellen Lusasi from Rehema and Webuye Youth tied in the top scorer’s chart. The action now moves to Kisumu in a fortnight.
