A witness said the robbers numbering about six, held sophisticated weapons and blocked the road with logs of wood at 5:12 pm.
He said the robbers shot into the air, before flagging down motorists coming from Gwagwalada axis, while some drivers reversed with speed to avoid the attack.
“The escort team which was coming from Lokoja axis might have been alerted by some motorists because they fired spontaneously into the air as they drove nearer to the robbery spot, which scared the robbers and made them flee into the bush,” the witness said.
When contacted, Abaji Divisional Police Officer, Chief Superintendent Sani Umar Paiko, could not be reached for comment but a senior police officer at the station confirmed the incident and said the robbers fled before the police arrived the scene.
It would be recalled that policemen in the wee hours on Monday foiled a robbery attack along the same road at Awawa village.
