Manchester United prospect Tom Cleverley targeting breakthrough season at Old Trafford

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley is targeting a place in the title winning side next season.

The talented 21-year-old has spent the season on-loan at Wigan Athletic but is hoping to feature under Sir Alex Ferguson next year.

He told Sky Sports News: “Hopefully first of all I can have a good finish to the season on Sunday and a good summer with the Under 21s if selected, and then into next season hopefully I can get a good pre-season under my belt and start featuring for Manchester United.”

Cleverley, who has scored four times in 22 league appearances during his spell at the DW Stadium, believes he will feature for United under Ferguson next season.

He added: “Yes, from what he’s been saying. I feel fully part of the team there and the squad, and hopefully I can just hit the ground running in pre-season and play my way into the team.”

As well as his current spell at Wigan, Cleverley had a stint in League One with Leicester in 2009 and an impressive season at Watford last term, and the midfielder believes it has been time will spent.

“That is what the plan has been for the last few years,” he added.

“I went out in League One, the Championship and now the Premier League, so it has been building up to next season when hopefully I can start featuring for the side and that will save the club from going out and having to buy another midfielder.”
