Geneva — The Angolan minister of Social Welfare, João Baptista Kussumua, met with the United Nations high commissioner for refugees, António Guterres, on Thursday in Geneva, to whom he informed about the voluntary repatriation of Angolans still in neighbouring countries.
Alike Wednesday’s audience with the director general of the International Organisation of Migration (IOM), William Swing, Thursday’s served for Angolan Government to ask for UNHCR technical assistance for the repatriation of about 66,000 Angolan refugees still in
neighbouring Zambia, Namibia, D R Congo and Botswana.
The meeting with Antonio Guterres also discussed the transportation of Angolan refugees, their settlement and social reintegration in the country.
There are 111,814 Angolan refugees registered with the Social Welfare Ministry (MINARS) who have chosen to remain as refugees in the DR Congo after the voluntary repatriation of 2003 and 2007.
According to MINARS data, there are 43,000 Angolan refugees in the DRC wishing to return home.
