Spio-Garbrah Set For Campaign Launch On Monday?

Chief Executive Officer of the London-based Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation (CTO), Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, is set to meet the Press on Monday, May 16th, to formally launch his flagbearership campaign and perhaps also name the team that in his estimation could help him beat President Mills and former First Lady, Nana Konadu, to the flagbearership position of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah on Tuesday resigned from his position as a National Vice-Chair of the ruling NDC and picked up nomination forms by proxy to contest the flag-bearership slot of the party. This latest development in the NDC brings to 3 the number of aspirants vying for the coveted position.

Per the constitution of the NDC, any National Executive member who intends contesting in the party’s primaries has to resign from his or her position.

Mohammed Nasiru, a member of Dr. Spio-Garbrah’s team, picked up the forms on his behalf.

“He has already been in the race because for some time, he has been considering calls from people to contest for the flagbearership. Now he is ensuring that the little resources he has will help him become the victor…” Mr. Nasiru said in an interview.

Mr. Nasiru also affirmed that indeed Dr. Spio-Garbrah will be jetting down from the United Kingdom (UK) to meet with the Press next week to highlight some major issues, including an outline of the strategy he will use to contest for the flagbearership.

In March this year, the CTO announced the launch of its search for a new leader to take the helm of the hundred year-old organisation in September 2011, when it advertised for a developmentally and commercially focused Chief Executive Officer, inviting applications from contenders from across the Commonwealth.

This was because, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, the current Chief Executive Officer of the CTO, had announced in September 2010 his decision to step down from his leadership role with effect from September 2011, to pursue personal interests.

Peacefmonline.com is reliably informed that despite invitations by some members of the CTO Council to continue for another term as CEO, the former NDC National Vice-Chair stood his grounds and said, “…it is now time to hand over the reins to a successor with compatible goals, to provide leadership to the organisation, to member countries, and through successful long-term strategic programmes, to the Commonwealth at large.”

Credible information reaching peacefmonline.com is that the successor to Dr. Spio-Garbrah is expected to be identified by May 2011 and be formally approved by the CTO Council at its meeting in Trinidad and Tobago on 15-16th September, 2011.
