AFC Leopards new coach Nick Yakhama has condemned Sunday incident at Mumias Sugar Sports Complex and appealed to club supporters to give him time to find the team’s lost form. Irate fans ran amok on Sunday occasioning match referees severe injuries and engaging the police in running battles after their club was beaten 2-0 by Thika United in a Kenya Premier League match that was relayed ‘Live’ by SuperSport. Yakhama said Rome was not built in a day and told the club fans to respect match results instead of taking the law into their own hands. “I need time to learn the players and pick my first eleven. I also need time to get a winning combination, thus my humble appeal to Leopards fans to exercise patience,” Yakhama, who tried in vain to plead with supporters to end the fracas, said. This was Yakhama’s second match at the club since is making a return following the sacking of Robert Matano. However, Yakhama blamed centre referee Edward Lumbugu from Nairobi for sparking off fans’ fury by disallowing Leopards’ genuine goal and for allowing Thika United second goal which was scored from an offside position. The coach said the club lost their previous matches without any fan trouble because they were beaten fairly and appealed to soccer authorities and Kenya Football Referees Association to enlist the services of referees who can’t be compromised.
