The 39-year-old is currently in charge of Paderborn, doing an impressive job in consolidating their 2.Bundesliga status following last season’s promotion.
With St Pauli’s relegation from the Bundesliga all but confirmed, Schubert will be handed the task of steadying the ship while regaining the side’s status in Germany’s top division, with the coach relishing the challenge.
“I was delighted to hear from St Pauli. We had some very professional, target-orientated talks. I’ve got the ideal facilities here to implement my ideas on football. I’m very much looking forward to the challenge at St Pauli,” the new coach told the club’s official website.
Schubert will be joined in Hamburg by his loyal assistant Jan-Moritz Lichte with the two coaches agreeing a deal at the Millerntor on Wednesday evening with the club’s president, Stefan Orth.
“We’re getting two very well-educated, highly-motivated coaches who are hungry for success and will further develop our team and our play. They’ll continue on the successful path we’re on and they fit out sporting philosophy perfectly,” the president added.
St Pauli faces Bayern Munich on Saturday when it will need a victory and a Kaiserslaturen win over Wolfsburg for the club to avoid relegation this weekend.
