Wakiso District emerged the overall winner of the 2011 National Primary Schools Athletics Championship which came to an end at St. Leo’s College Kyegobe, Fort Portal last Saturday.
Wakiso amassed 192 points from three categories ( junior/ senior boys & senior girls) at the annual event that attracted a record attendance of 92 teams, 19 more than the 73 which attended the championship in Mbale last year. The 2010 champions Lamwo District finished second with 175 points while the newly-created Agago District finished third with 135.
Wakiso’s surge to the crown was bolstered by their performance in the junior girls category that they claimed after tallying up 53 points. Pader (51) and Kitgum (44) finished second and third respectively.
Consolation for Lamwo was that they took home the junior boys trophy with 74 points, 26 more than the dominant Wakiso (48). Arua, too, bagged some silverware when they accumulated 69 points to win the senior girls category.
Despite the big attendance, the championship also recorded the biggest number of teams that didn’t score a single point. In the junior category, only 37 out of the 92 teams scored at least a point. In the senior category, only 33 teams scored.
