Rehemtullah Wins African Cricket Seat

Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) chief executive officer Zulfikar Rehemtullah (pictured) has been elected African Cricket Association (ACA) competitions director.Rehemtullah, who played an inspirational role on the introduction of women cricket in Africa in 2003, won the seat during the ACA elections held in Nairobi, Kenyan earlier this week.

“I am very happy to win such a major post in ACA,” Rehemtullah said in an interview with The Citizen yesterday.

He said his major duties would include supervising various competitions in Africa, including the ICC World Cup qualifiers for the Africa zone.

The TCA executive officer has played a key role in turning around the country’s cricket fortunes in the past eight years or so.Tanzania has of late been competing in high-profile competitions, including the International Cricket Council (ICC) and ACA events.

Rehemtullah, who is also a coach, has helped a number of local players to excel internationally. They include Athuman Kakonzi, Hamis Abdallah, Khalil Rehemtullah and Bnson Mwita who ply their trade in England.

The Nairobi polls also saw Qwesy Sagoy elected ACA chairman, while Kenyan Sameer Inamdaar, Rehemtullah’s predecessor, won the vice chairman post.Depenkrat Segupta of Mozambique was elected ACA treasurer and Sibare of Uganda won the development director post.

ACA will later this month organise the Africa Division 2 T20 tournament in South Africa in efforts to promote the sport in the continent.Tanzania will launch its campaign in the tournament against Rwanda on May 14 at Benonin ground.
