Bubba Watson Watson hit six birdies and one eagle in his opening round

Bubba Watson holds a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Classic of New Orleans with the American firing a 66 to end six under par.

Englishman Luke Donald is two shots behind the American on four under having shot a first-round score of 68.

But Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell is on one over, while England’s Justin Rose ended the day five over par.

There is a cluster of four players a shot behind Watson on five under including Sweden’s Carl Pettersson.

Donald fired himself into contention thanks largely to two birdies on his final two holes in a round that included no bogeys.

Watson, though, hit six birdies, one eagle and two bogeys to become the early man to catch.
