The rate of malaria infection, which is recorded as the highest cause of death in Africa, has reduced in Liberia, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf said Monday during the official observance of World Malaria Day here.

Even though the president provided no statistics, she said figures given to her by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare indicate the reduction.

“There is a great reduction of malaria in Liberia,” the president told the audience at the program held at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium here to observe World Malaria Day.

She disclosed that the deadly disease has 90% cases in Africa, mostly infecting children and women, and urged the use of treated bed net to prevent mosquito bites which transmit the parasites that cause malaria.

The president also encouraged citizens to regularize sanitation practices in their environments – a widely recognized means of preventing the killer disease.

She however expressed appreciation to countries and agencies that continue to assist in the eradication of malaria in Liberia.

Meanwhile, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield has reiterated that her government remains committed to the eradication of malaria in Liberia.

Visiting Malian President, Amadou Toumani Toure, flanked by President Sirleaf, graced the occasion marking the observance of World Malaria Day here.
