Downpour Disrupts Training Sessions

Torrential rains Dar es Salaam and other parts of the country have been experiencing in the past one month or so might affect the national cricket team’s preparations for next month’s Africa Advanced Players (APL) League.

The cricketers, who were on a five-day recess to celebrate Easter, are expected to resume training today at the Annadil Burhan grounds in the city ahead of the continental event opening in Johannesburg next month. “We expect to resume off camp training at the Annadil Burhan grounds,” team skipper Khamis Abdallah confirmed to The Citizen yesterday.

The inclement weather has forced some sports associations to put on hold training sessions of their respective teams.Cricket and golf are among the outdoor sporting events that have been affected by the rains.

But Abdallah insisted yesterday that they would not reschedule their training sessions.Tanzania is among the six countries lined up for the inaugural continental tournament.

Other nations are: Kenya, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Namibia and hosts South Africa. England-based players are among those constituting the national team for the South Africa mission.

They include skipper Abdallah and Athuman Kakonzi who ply their trade with England’s first division team, Watford Town Cricket Club.Also in the list are: Khalil Rehemtullah- a right hand batsman, who plays for Abbots Langley Cricket Club in Leicester City, and opening batsman Abhik Patwa, who features for Countesthope Cricket Club.

“Our target is to make our presence felt in the Johannesburg tournament,” Abdallah added.
