Basena Relishes Simba’s Job

UGANDA Cranes assistant tactician Moses Basena has described his newfound Simba SC head coach assignment as an opportunity to improve his curriculum vitae.

“I am going to Simba to strengthen my CV,” the former Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Basena, told Ugandan daily, New Vision.

Mainland Premier League outfit, Simba, appointed Basena last week to replace Zambian Patrick Phiri, whose contract with the club ended recently after the club failed to defend the title, which was won by arch rivals Yanga.

It will be first time for the German trained Basena, who started coaching in 2000, to work outside his native Uganda but the ex- Kampala City Council FC and Uganda’s Simba SC is optimistic that he would revive the Msimbazi Street club’s glorious past.

Simba Vice-Chairman Godfrey Nyange ‘Kaburu’ confirmed to the ‘Daily News’ on Wednesday that the Cranes tactician was expected later in the evening yesterday ahead of the signing of the contract with the Mainland giants.

“We have already reached an agreement with Basena, we’re expecting him on Wednesday evening prior to the signing of the contract. He’s going to start his duties immediately,” said Kaburu.

Kaburu reiterated that Basena will be on probation for six months, scheduled to start effectively next month, before signing a long term contract at the club.

“We have offered him a long term contract but it all depends how good he is going to be during the probation period,” the Simba vice-chairman noted.

Simba, via its chairman Ismail Aden Rage, announced on Saturday that the entire technical bench, which comprised of Phiri, Amri Said (assistant coach), Innocent Njomvu (manager) and physician Cosmas Kapinga, had been dissolved to pave way for new staff.

Kaburu said the club leadership will discuss with Basena on the recruitment of the right personnel for the technical bench and the tactician has been given freedom to select his assistant.

He said: “We are determined to rebuild our technical bench. After a disappointing season we definitely need a strong technical bench staff and we hope Basena fits the bill.”

On the recruitment of other technical bench members, Kaburu said: “Apart from head coach and his assistant we’re also looking for the goalkeepers’ coach. But anything will depend on recommendations from the coach (Basena).”
