The Namibia Sports Commission and First National Bank (FNB) officially launched the first-ever Dr Sam Nujoma Windhoek Marathon in the capital on Tuesday this week.

The event is scheduled to take place on 14 May at the Windhoek Independence Stadium, where athletes will run a planned route through the capital city. The organisers are hoping to attract at least 1000 athletes, coaches, sports administrators and volunteers.

“The commission will be hosting the marathon in accordance with its mandate of coordinating, developing and promoting sport in the country,” said Commissioner Amos Shiyuka, at the launch this week.

Ingrid Goeieman, manager of sponsorships at FBN, said the bank did not hesitate to pledge medals, trophies, race numbers and pins as well as other necessities to the event when the organisers requested for support towards the Marathon.

She added that the bank will also host a water point for the athletes during the competition.

Goeieman stated that the bank is extremely excited to be part of this event because of its commitment towards the health of the nation which is developed and promoted through sport.
