Steven Pienaar has been passed fit by South Africa’s team doctor, ending fears over the Tottenham midfielder’s need for a groin operation.

On Tuesday, the 29-year-old conceded that constant training was aggravating a month-old injury and hadn’t ruled out the possibility of requiring surgery to remedy the problem.

But Pienaar completed 82 minutes as skipper for his national side in their 1-0 victory over Egypt on Saturday and the midfielder is set to be involved in Tottenham’s Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid, as well as their pursuit of fourth place in the Premier League.

“Pienaar trained with his team-mates on Wednesday and Thursday,” confirmed South Africa’s team doctor Ephraim Nematswerani.

“I can safely say the team has a clean bill of health.”
