Roma’s Philippe Mexes remains coy over summer move speculation

Roma defender Philippe Mexes is keeping his options open as far as his future is concerned, but hinted that he wants to remain in Serie A.

The France international defender, who was on target for Les Bleus in their 2-0 victory over Luxembourg in a Euro 2012 qualifier on Friday evening, is out of contract with Roma in the summer.

Media reports in Italy suggest that a deal with AC Milan has been struck and that he will join the Rossoneri despite talks of a contract renewal with the Lupi, although the English press claimed on Saturday that Liverpool would be interested in the centre-back should Bolton Wanderers’ Gary Cahill join Manchester United.

Mexes has played down talk of his going to the Premier League, but is also coy about the possibility of remaining with Roma beyond the summer.

“My contract will expire this summer, but I don’t feel under pressure,” said the 28-year-old, according to AGI. “I feel like a free spirit. I will wait and assess all proposals. I never said I would leave Italy to go abroad.

“I’ll make up my mind over the next few months. I know there’s a lot of talk about Milan, about the contract renewal with Roma and a possible move to the Premiership. But I have nothing to say right now, I’m just living by the day.”

Mexes has been with Roma since 2004 and has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Italian top flight.

He currently stands 307th in the Castrol Rankings, up from 455th the previous month.
