John Terry: Fabio Capello Should Never Have Stripped Me Of England Captaincy

England skipper John Terry believes manager Fabio Capello was wrong to take the captaincy away from him last year.

The Chelsea center-back was at the center of a media storm due to allegations concerning his personal life at the time, which saw Wayne Bridge bring his international career to an end.

The 30-year-old was then relieved of his duties as the captain of the national team, with Rio Ferdinand taking over his duties.

But with Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard sidelined for the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales, Capello has made Terry his permanent captain again.

Now the defender has admitted he believes that the ex-Juventus boss was wrong to strip him of the armband.

“I didn’t agree with the decision, but I said I respected it and would continue to work hard,” said Terry.

But the Stamford Bridge favorite maintained that he had promised to remain fully committed to the Three Lions even after being demoted.

He said: “When I met Fabio and assistant manager Franco Baldini at Wembley, I looked them in the eye and said they would get nothing less from me.

“I feel that is what I’ve done and maybe they’ve both looked at that in me.”

Terry added: “I didn’t agree with the decision, which I told them face to face.

“I could understand it a bit. But once they spoke to me – and it’s difficult for legal reasons to go into detail – I felt that I didn’t deserve to lose the armband.

“People say it was a six-minute meeting but it was 10 or 15. We spoke about stuff openly and honestly, which will, hopefully, stay private between us three.

“As I’ve said, I accepted their decision but it doesn’t mean I agreed with it and I never will.”
