Newcastle United are reportedly set to offer a new contract to midfielder Danny Guthrie to keep the player at St James’ Park.

The 23-year-old who was a driving force in the Magpies’ promotion to the Premier League has started only seven games this term.

According to News of the World, Newcastle want Guthrie to cover for Joey Barton and are prepared to extend his contract at the club as Nottingham Forest are presenting themselves as potential suitors for the young talent.

Guthrie joined St James’ Park in 2008 from Liverpool on a £3.5million fee under Kevin Keegan who compared him to legends Rob Lee and Paul Bracewell.
