According to the deputy Minister, the situation where journalists are said to misquote politicians and other members of society just for the sake of promoting their media houses is not the best for the nation’s growing democracy.
The former deputy Minister of Tourism was reacting to a Daily Guide publication that he (Kobby Acheampong) attacked the personality of the flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo, describing him as a “fruit cake”.
According to the Daily Guide, the minister made the comments when he addressed members of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the Tertiary Education Institute Network (TEIN) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kumasi on Tuesday, March 15.
The Daily Guide newspaper added that Mr Kobby Acheampong also described Nana Addo as an untidy man who did not care about the type of clothes he wore when attending public functions of national interest.
However, speaking on Citi FM’s Saturday political talk show the ‘Big Issue’, Mr Acheampong vehemently denied insulting Nana Addo, adding that he was completely misinterpreted.
He urged journalists to be cautious, adding that misinterpretation of persons could lead to dire consequences on those personalities.
“Journalists must be very circumspect in reporting what they hear, they must be very circumspect because one usage of a word that is misinterpreted gives the whole thing that is said a different context”.
