The Scottish club showed interest in the Republic of Ireland centre back last season after a string of brilliant displays helped Aston Villa reach the Carling Cup final.
That interest was not followed up up and Dunne stayed put, but since the arrival of manager Gerard Houllier things have turned sour at Villa Park.
On a recent team building trip, Dunne and team mate James Collins were forced to apologise for their drunken antics and fined as a result.
It seems now Dunne is almost certain to leave the Midlands and lthough he still has two years left to run on his Villa contract, the 31-year-old Irishman could be snapped up for as little as £2 million.
Dunne has made 487 career appearances in total with Everton, Manchester City and Aston Villa and has 64 international caps for Ireland.
