Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini slammed the two “stupid goals” his side let in as they went down 2-0 at Dynamo Kiev in the first leg of their last 16 Europa League clash.

Strikes from former Chelsea forward Andriy Shevchenko and Oleg Gusev sealed an impressive victory for the home side but the City manager was left ruing costly errors for his side’s defeat.

He told ITV4: “I think we should pay attention in defensive areas, we conceded two stupid goals, I think if you play in the final-eight in the Europa League you can’t concede goals like these.”

The Blues struggled going forward and failed to carve out any clear cut chances for themselves. Despite his team’s lack of forward impetus the former Inter boss believed City played well and were perhaps unlucky to be two goals down.

He added: “I think the match was good, we played a good game. I think we made two mistakes for both goals. In this game we can’t concede goals like this.

“Kiev are a good team but I think the right result should have been 2-1. We should have played better in the defensive phase.”

The City boss was adamant that his side had the better of possession and ran the rule of the match but were hit on the break repeatedly, something which annoyed the Italian.

“It’s frustrating because we had control of the game, they played on the counter-attack because of this,” he said. “I’m frustrated because we conceded two goals and you can’t do this.”

City lost Mario Balotelli early in the second half after appearing to come down with an illness which resulted in him making a bizarre late entry to the restart, which, according to reports, was due to an allergic reaction.
