The Dutchman injured his knee during a training session ahead of Schalke’s DFB-Pokal clash against Bayern Munich two weeks ago, and missed the German side’s last two Bundesliga games, and looks set to miss out again against the Spaniards at the Veltins Arena tomorrow.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Magath said: “He Huntelaar is making progress but is not yet fit enough to play.”
Schalke have a slight advantage after grabbing a vital away goal at the Mestalla in the first-leg, and Magath warned his Koenigsblauen players they cannot rely on fortune alone as he set out his approach for the game.
He added: “It would be far too dangerous to sit back and play for a goalless draw. One careless moment towards the end and it could all be lost.”
