Lagos, Nigeria would usually be the last place to see a Broadway musical go on tour, but which better place for the story of African legend, Fela Kuti to hit the stage than in his home country and city? Yes, the award winning musical, “Fela!,” based on the life of the Nigerian performer and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, which ran for 14 months on Broadway and recently ended a three-month engagement in London, is headed next for Lagos, the hometown of its title character, who died in 1997.
According to earlier publications, the lead producer, Stephen Hendel had hinted that he was in discussions to take the show to Lagos, and now there is a firm date. The production will run April 20 to 25 at the New Expo Center in the Eko Hotel. It will feature the original Broadway cast, including Sahr Ngaujah, above, as Fela and Lillias White as his mother, Funmilayo.
