Elizabeth Taylor spent her 79th birthday watching the Oscars.

The double Academy Award-winning actress – who was admitted to Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center earlier this month with symptoms of heart failure – was rooting for ‘The King’s Speech’, which took home four prizes at the ceremony last night (27.02.11).

Sally Morrison, the representative of the Hollywood legend, said: “Elizabeth will spend a quiet birthday this year as she continues to rest and recover at Cedars-Sinai.

“She plans to watch the Academy Awards with family and close friends and will be rooting for ‘The King’s Speech’.”

Elizabeth – who won Oscars for her roles in 60s classics ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ and ‘Butterfield 8’ – is planning a “proper birthday celebration” when she returns home.

Her representative added: “A proper birthday celebration will be planned for when she returns home. Elizabeth is very grateful for all of the warm birthday wishes she has received from around the world.”

The 79-year-old star – who first underwent heart surgery in 2009 – is said to be improving by the day, but will remain under the supervision of doctors for the immediate future.

Ms. Morrison recently said in a statement: “Elizabeth Taylor’s doctors continue to be encouraged by her progress. She is in good spirits and continues to feel stronger every day.”
