Bernard Mornah, General Secretary of the People’s National Convention, a member of the Nkrumaist family, says one of the biggest mistakes Dr Kwame Nkrumah made was not shooting Dr J B Danquah and other leaders of the opposition when they raised objections to the way he led the country.

Speaking on Metro TV’s mid day news on the 45th anniversary of Dr Nkrumah’s overthrow in a coup d’état, the PNC scribe said Ghana’s first president should have rid himself of the “terrorists” who opposed his drive for a left-leaning form of government, and his vision of uniting the continent into a United States of Africa by ordering their execution.

Responding to claims by Asare Otchere-Darko, Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, that Ghana would probably have been going through a Libya-style upheaval by now if Dr Nkrumah had not been overthrown, Mr Mornah accused the founders of the modern day New Patriotic Party of being behind the coup, alluding to “$13 million” and “allowances paid to their families whilst they were in jail.”

Some leading members of the independence movement who opposed Dr Nkrumah’s leadership style and ideology were thrown into jail or fled when the ‘African Showboy’ enacted a number of laws to ensure his rule. Among others, Dr J B Danquah, a member of the Big Six, died whilst in Preventive Detention at the Nsawam Prisons, while Obetsebi Lamptey, another of the Big Six, is said to have died chained to a hospital bed.

Ahead of the 45th anniversary, members of the Convention Peoples Party, another of the Nkrumaist family, held a candlelight vigil at the Party Headquarters on Wednesday, February 23. It was attended by leaders and rank and file of the party, as well as other believers in Nkrumah’s ideology.

A statement signed by CPP Communications Director William Dowokpor said “It is believed that the commemoration of the event; a solemn candlelight vigil with prayers will rekindle the purposeful organizational spirit of the CPP that should lead to the strengthening of the structures of the Party towards the attainment of its objective of winning political power to govern Ghana again.”

On Thursday February 24, the Socialist Forum of Ghana organized a public forum on the theme “Nkrumaism will Triumph” with keynote address delivered by Dr Gamal Nasser of the University of Ghana. The forum was chaired by Kwesi Pratt Jnr, a member of the Socialist Forum.

Boldly inscribed on the posters announcing the event was the heading “Ghana’s Day of Shame.”
