Lyon coach Claude Puel was left content with his side’s performance after the French giants drew 1-1 with Real Madrid at Stade Gerland.

The result leaves les Gones needing to earn a positive result at the Bernabeu after conceding an unwanted away goal.

“We proved that we were able to compete with this team. We will need to create more plays and take more initiative at the Bernabeu,” the former Lille boss told French media after the game.

“Real are a team with quick players but tonight we deprived them of space. One game was very strong defensively. This leaves us with enough confidence for the second leg because everything is possible, even if conceding tonight was quite annoying.”

The French club travel to Spain for the return fixture in three weeks time where they will be hoping to knock Real Madrid out of the Champions League at the round of 16 for the successive season.
