The Central Regional Minister, Ama Benyiwa Doe, has finally broken her silence on allegations that she poisoned and killed her husband in far away Nigeria, claiming the story, posted on Ghanaweb by Dennis Doe-Vormavor and given prominence by the ‘Daily Guide’ newspaper recently, was simply “far from the truth and simply outrageous.”
“I simply decided to be quiet on this matter, but I think that I must tell the whole world that my ex-husband is alive and that I have never killed anybody,” she said. In an exclusive interview with The Enquirer newspaper Monday, this week, she said that every single portion of the article by Doe-Vormavor was wrong because he concocted the story to suit whoever hired him to do so.
According to her, the man at the centre of the controversy, Mr. Jerry Oscar Kobla Doe, is alive and not dead at all. “I learnt that the man is residing somewhere in Accra, but I don’t know the exact location,” she said.
Madam Benyiwa Doe told The Enquirer that she met Mr. Doe in the early 70s while he was teaching mathematics at the Achimota School in Accra, while she was working at the University of Ghana as an accounts officer. “We got married in 1973, after which my husband left for Nigeria and in 1977 after seeking leave of absence from the University authorities I joined him in that country,” she said.
Madam Benyiwa Doe, who sounded claim throughout the interview, told The Enquirer that she returned to Ghana In 1979 and joined her former place of employment. “I joined the revolutionary at the period and fully participated in all activities at the time,” she said.
“At all material times, I never hid from the public and, indeed, if I was wanted by the authorities in Nigeria, as the so-called Doe Vormawor, sought to portray, they could have come for me easily,” she added.
She told The Enquirer after waiting for some time for her husband whom she was expecting to join her, she went to court for a divorce.
“It was only in 1993 that the court granted me the divorce and since then I have been living my life,” she said.
Asked why she is still keeping the husband’s name, though she had been granted the divorce, the Central Regional Minister said that she did not want to change names.
Madam Benyiwa Doe told The Enquirer that because Doe-Vormavor was doing the wrong bidding for whoever sent him, he could not simply mention the name of his uncle he claimed he was fighting for.
“It is also unfortunate that Doe-Vormavor could not simply tell the world where his uncle he is claiming is dead hailed from,” she said.
According to her, Mr. Doe, her ex-husband, comes from Wusuta in the Kpando District of the Volta Region and anybody who cares could check from his family whether he is dead or not.
“I don’t know what prompted the gentleman to come out with such a concocted story and what he intends achieving out of it,” she said.
